Today, I’m sharing a simple 15-minute step-by-step gratitude practice that has made my life lighter and more joyful—just by shifting how I see my life.
Many of us drift through life with a nagging sense that we should be doing or having more. This constant wondering leads to chronic dissatisfaction. Sometimes, it even pulls us into depression.
That dissatisfaction often brings along fear, anxiety, and worry—about our present, and even more so about our future.
If you’ve ever:
- Felt envious of someone else because you’re stuck in unhealthy comparison…
- Dwelled in entitlement or self-pity because all you see is what’s going wrong in your life…
- Felt disconnected or lonely without really knowing why…
Then this gratitude practice is for you.
It’s the exact self-reflection method I use every single day to pull myself out of a funk. It keeps me calm, smiling, and grounded—no matter what’s going on around me.
Life is short. Life is precious. We all deserve to feel joy and contentment.
💭 My Lightbulb Moment
Some time ago, I was overwhelmed by this constant, recurring feeling that I wanted more out of life. I became easily irritated because things weren’t going the way I wanted.
Then one morning, while on a walk, I listened to a podcast about gratitude. And suddenly, everything clicked.
I had heard people talk about gratitude before, but this time, it sank deep. Maybe it hit home because I desperately needed that message right then.
Gratitude has become a buzzword. Everyone’s talking about it. But I rarely came across anything that taught the mindset behind it—the mental shift that unlocks its real power.
I used to wonder:
“Do I just write a list of good things and hope to feel better?”
“But what if I have nothing to be grateful for?”
It’s easy to feel like there’s not much to be thankful for, especially when you’re going through a rough patch. But trust me—there’s always good happening in your life. You just need to shift your perspective to see it.
🙏 Gratitude in Practice
Try this exercise in the morning, before the world starts demanding your time.
- Sit in a quiet spot where you won’t be distracted.
- Take a piece of paper and write down the things you’re grateful for.
Now here’s where the magic begins.
🕰 Step 1: Think of What You Once Longed For—And Now Have
There was a time when you prayed for the very things you now take for granted.
- Maybe you once wished for a loving, healthy relationship—and now you have one.
- Think back to starting college, dreaming of completing your degree and landing a job. Now you’re working and earning a good wage—maybe even more than you’d hoped.
- Remember the early days of your pregnancy, wishing for a healthy baby. Now you have happy, healthy children running around your home.
Take a moment. Go back to those moments. Feel what it was like to want what you now have.
🌟 Step 2: Acknowledge What You’ve Always Had
Next, write down the things that have always been part of your life. The things you take for granted—but others would give anything to have.
- You can breathe without machines. Some people need external devices just to stay alive.
- Your eyesight and senses work.
- You have clean water, a roof over your head, and people who love you—maybe parents, siblings, or friends.
- You live in a peaceful country. No war. No bombs. No fear.
- You have the freedom to chase dreams of your choosing.
Pause. Really think about this. Be in awe of it all.
🧠 Why Gratitude Works
Gratitude is a daily battle in the mind. Our brains are wired to focus on what’s wrong. A million things can go right, but one bad thing happens, and we forget it all.
That’s why this practice matters.
When you practice gratitude often, it heals the quiet emptiness many of us carry. It brings your attention back to all that is already good and already here.
💡 A Shift in Perspective
Every day, I remind myself how lucky I am to be alive and healthy.
Sometimes I think—right now, someone is getting a cancer diagnosis. In that moment, their world—and their family’s world—comes to a halt.
All those prayers for a G-Wagon… or a designer bag… or office drama? Gone. Replaced with just one prayer: Please let them be okay.
💗 Love Your Life—Wrinkles and All
I’ve found that when I live this way—grateful for what is—life becomes easier. I’m more cheerful. I connect better with others. I take up space without guilt. I feel like I belong.
When you love your life as it is and accept the world as it is, you stop sweating the small stuff. The things that used to annoy you might still happen—but you respond with a calm, knowing smile.
Because you understand now: life, with all its highs and lows, is a gift.
🌞 So Wake Up and Choose Happiness
How?
By practicing gratitude.
Look around you.
Feel into your life.
Ask yourself:
What am I grateful for today?
Then write it down. Breathe it in.
And watch your life shift.
